5th Annual Ebenezer D. Basset Student Achievement Ceremony
The Man Enough Support Initiative (MESI) Ebenezer D. Bassett Student Achievement Award was created to recognize the achievement of Central Connecticut State University college men. The award was established as a vehicle to expand the definition of student success by highlighting the personal attributes that are involved in the health, retention, and graduation of a student. Perseverance, persistence, character, and integrity are just of few of the important attributes students demonstrate on their journey towards goal completion. We (MESI) believe that a successful student is a healthy student.
This Ebenezer D. Bassett Award was created to celebrate the male spirit. It is our desire to work with the CCSU campus community to identify noteworthy college men who are accomplishing personal, educational, and (or) professional goals. We decided to create an open process for nominating students that would allow those making nominations (students, faculty, and administrators) the freedom to select a male student who they believe is most deserving of this special recognition and honor.
Ambassador Ebenezer Don Carlos Bassett was a man that came from humble means. A descendent of African captives, Mr. Bassett elevated himself from obscurity to a place of prominence on the world’s stage. He had a plan for his life and he executed it. He saw beyond the conditions and circumstances of his life, the position of his family, and his economic limitations. Mr. Bassett took advantage of opportunities offered to him and he created other opportunities for himself. His educational aspirations brought him to the Norm School (present day Central Connecticut State University). He walked the halls of this institution and left a legacy for all gentlemen to follow.
The Bassett Student Achievement Medal was named after Ambassador Bassett because his life remains an example to all aspiring CCSU college men. His life testifies that it is not where you start in life but where you finish.
“Start with a dream. Finish with a future.”
