Rules and Definitions
Deadlines
1) Promotion Period: February 2, 2018 – April 11, 2018.
An entry fee of $7.00 per division made to the CCSU Ebenezer D. Bassett Scholarship Endowment Fund is required (donations are nonrefundable).
No entries will be accepted after Wednesday, April 11, 2018 (5:00 pm).

2) Community voting: April 11 – April 24, 2018.
3) Grand Finals: April 24, 2018 at Semesters, Student Center, Central Connecticut State University
Winners will be publicly recognized at the final ceremony on Tuesday, April 24, 2018.

CATEGORIES
1) Natural Beard (The Rugged)
2) Styled Beard (The Gentleman)
3) Goatee & Mustache (The Scholar)
Natural Beard (or the Rugged) - No “tips pointed upward,” nothing narrow and pointed, just who has the best beard! Length is important, but isn’t everything. Mass, density, shape, color, and overall impression all count. (World Beard & Moustache Championships definition)
Styled Beard (or the Gentleman) - Contestants can have both a beard and mustache or just a beard. This division is based on originality and creativity. Let your artistic side shine in this division. Artificial styling aids such as moustache wax, hair spray, hair cream, styling foam, hair gel, hair pins, rubber bands, hair ties, and the like are permitted in this division.
Goatee or Mustache & Goatee (or the Scholar), but no sideburns.
Extra Honorable Mention Categories:
- People’s Choice- All contestants will be entered into this category. No extra fee required. Chosen from total scores from the First Round Contestants. Announced at the Beard & Mustache Competition Grand Finally.
- “Honorable Mention” – All will be entered. You simply tried you hardest to grow that beard but your genetics have failed you! No extra fee required.
- Longest Beard– Simply the person with the longest beard. No extra fee required.

2. You may enter more than one category but a separate entry form must be completed and a separate fee paid for entry in each category selected.
3. By registering for the competition, all competitors give their permission to the organizers and to the organizers’ designees to use their likeness (e.g., photographs, video tapes, and audio tapes of the competitor for promotion purposes. Any competitor who does not agree to this provision are excluded from participation in the competition.
4. The deadline for entry in the beard-growing contest is April 11, 2018. You will be informed of further details regarding your entry one week of the date of your entry.
5. Contestants must be present at the time of judging. Any competitor who does not appear when called to the stage will be eliminated.
6. The organizers reserve the right to modify these rules at any time. Any rule modifications will be announced prior to the competition (by email) or publicly before the competition begins.

Regulations

2. In each division, each judge will rank the top three competitors in each division. Each judge will use a 10-point scale. The contestant with the highest number of points move on Round (3) or Grand Finals. In the event of a tie for any of the first three places, the judges will be asked to revote among the tied competitors. In the event of a tie during the Grand Finals, by default the tie will be judged by the audience (those in attendance at the Grand Final Competition. Voting ballets will be distributed and collected by the Judges. Judges will announce the final results. The Finalist with the highest number of votes will move on in the competition or will receive the highest place standing.
3. Top three scored in each category will move on to Best-in-Beard round. An overall Best-in-Beard distinction will be selected from the top three scores in each category. (the beard deemed by the Audience as “Best in Show”)
4. Discourteous, abusive, or unprofessional behavior by a contestant may lead to disqualification at the organizers’ discretion.
5. The results will be made public following the competition on Tuesday, April 24, 2018.
6. Artificial facial hair is not permitted.
7. In all divisions, the judges will be asked to determine which contestant’s facial hair best enhances his overall appearance, style, and personality. In the styled division, the judges will be asked to consider originality and creativity as well.
8. The Organizers accepts no responsibility for any entries that are incomplete, illegible, corrupted or fail to reach us by the relevant closing date or time for any reason.
9. By completing and signing the entrance form, the contestant agree that photographs taken during and after the contest can be used by the MESI for publicity, website, and for promoting future wellness events on the CCSU campus.
10. Registration fees (donations) are nonrefundable.

Prizes
Prizes will be awarded for the top three highest scores in each category (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and the Best-in-Beard category. The organizers have the right to substitute prizes based on sponsor’s honoring the delivery of their donated product or service.

Judging Details
Determination of Competition Winners:
Contest Entry Judging Phase: Round (1) Campus Community Vote. The photos of each contestant will be displayed and voted on by the CCSU campus community. Contestants will receive a point value based on the number of votes received. Point values will reflect the number of votes received (e.g., 10 votes = 10 points). Votes from the Round (1) ruling will calculate into the Finalist Scores during the Grand Finally Competition. In order to be eligible to vote, Voters must show a CCSU ID. Voters are allowed to cast as many votes as they like and vote on any candidate. Voters can only cast votes once a day. Voters are excluded from bringing completed ballet slips to the voting location. Contestants are prohibited from obtaining votes by any fraudulent or inappropriate means, including, without limitation, offering prizes or other inducements to members of the public and/ or using any websites or online forums designed to induce individuals or provide other incentives to vote for their Entry, as determined by Organizer in its sole discretion.
All eligible Entries received during Round (1) will be judged on the following criteria:
Best Overall Beard
1. Contestant (1) Favorite
2. Contestant (2) Second Favorite
3. Contestant (3) Third Favorite
Entries with 20 or more votes will precede to Round (2) or the Semi-Finalist. It is the sole discretion of the Organizers and Judges to increase or decrease the number of Semi-Finalists in order to receive a sufficient number of eligible and qualified Contestants. Round (2) or Semi-Finals will take place at the Grand Finals Competition. Judging will follow rules contained in the 2018 Beard Growing Contest Rules (section 4). By participating, entrants agree to abide by these Official Rules and the decisions of the Organizers and judges, which are final and binding in all matters relating to this Contest.
Contest Semi-Finalist Notification:
Potential Semi-Finalists will be determined and notified by Direct Message, telephone and/ or email. Noncompliance with any of the foregoing, with these Official Rules, the inability to contact a potential Semi-Finalist within a reasonable time period, or any notification being returned as non-deliverable may result in disqualification and, at the Organizer’s discretion, a runner-up being chosen. Semi-Finalist status is subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with these Official Rules. The Organizers will also display the names and photos of the Semi-Finalist in the Student Center. Neither Organizer, nor anyone acting on its behalf, will enter into communications with any entrant regarding Contest other than to notify the potential Semi-Finalists and winner.
Round (3): Contest Grand Finals
In order to remain eligible, the Semi-Finalists’ must attend the Grand-Finals Beard & Mustache Competition. Semi-Finalist not attending or arriving late to the event will be disqualified and are no longer eligible to compete. Semi-Finalist must personally appear at the competition for official review by the competition Judges.
No scores from the previous Rounds will carry over to the Grand Finals. Judges will score Contestants using a 0-10 rating scale. Contestants will receive scores in ten categories. Upon using the above calculation, the Contestant with top three (3) highest scored are determined the first, second, and third place winners in each of the competition categories. The highest score will receive first place, the second highest score second place, and the third highest score third place. In the event of a tie during the Voting Period, such tied Entries will be re-judged (following the rules outlined in the Rules section).
The three highest scores in each category will move on to compete for the highest honor or “Best-in-Beard”. The audience will select overall Best-in-Beard. Judges will disseminate voting ballets to the audience. The highest score will receive Best in Show and overall.
